Katamari Damacy!

I really should post something about this game. It's ... unique. In a good way.

Let's start with the premise. You play as the Prince of All Cosmos, son of (guess who?) the King of All Cosmos. The King of All Cosmos has unfortunately destroyed all the stars in the sky, and the moon too. (He was possibly drunk at the time.) So it becomes your job to help restore the skies. You do this by being sent to the Earth and rolling up stuff into your katamari. (Of course.)

What can you roll up into your katamari? Well, you start off with things like coins, dice, caramels, chocolates, etc. As you gather more stuff, you can start rolling up larger objects like socks, shoes, cats, bikes, cars, houses, airplanes, supertankers, skyscrapers, and islands.

Nescio quid dicas

Someone pointed to this handly Latin phrase guide in the Earth edition of the H2G2. Some of the better ones:

Raptus regaliter
Royally screwed
Ut si!
As if!
Nihil curo de ista tua stulta superstitione
I'm not interested in your dopey religious cult
Fac me cocleario vomere!
Gag me with a spoon!
Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabris, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam.
I have a catapult. Give me all of your money, or I will fling an enormous rock at your head.

Thanks, Visio

OK, so I created a simple test file in Visio. No big deal. I'm done with it so I go off to close it, and get...

Visio internal error: #2222
Action 1361: Close Window

First try closing and reopening the file. Next try restarting Visio.

First, note the action: "Close Window." Next note the helpful suggestion of "closing and reopening the file."

God is still speaking,

I am, technically, a Congregationalist, and as such, I belong to a church that is itself a member of the United Church of Christ which is currently running a campaign called "God is still speaking," (complete with the comma), which you can currently see an annoying flash ad for in place of what had been a very nice webpage, or you can go directly to the God is still speaking, page, which displays the ad in an embedded video whether you want it to or

Great Moments in Documentation II

Again, the details have been changed to protect the guilty.

The example below shows the format of an example file, configuration.xml.
Explanations for fields are included as comments:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration>
  <settings>
//Settings to be used by the system
    <database>
       <info>
          <name>Name</name>
... and so on

Ummm......

  1. That's XML. "//" isn't an XML comment. "<!-- -->" is. You do know XML, right? Please?
  2. There really was only one comment, before any actual data, which didn't explain any of the options, at all. That was it.

Video Game Awards

OK, so as almost nobody cares, SpikeTV is showing the 2004 Video Game Awards (Warning: webpage is useless).

And wow, are they awful.

Have you ever seen the MTV music awards? Know how half the personalities they get can't act worth anything? Well, SpikeTV managed to get that up to almost all of them can't act. Watching the "segments" between awards is painful. Just... painful.

Anyway, they just showed a "preview" for an upcoming Godfather game. Which was interesting, in that it was obviously a cutscene, involving one character and one area. And... nothing else. Congratulations, you can create cutscenes as well as Metal Gear Solid 3 did. What do you do in the game? What's the point?

Great Moments in Documentation

So I'm reading through the documentation for this product, which is rather lacking, and come against a snippet like the following (no, it wasn't originally JDBC, but to protect the guilty, it is now):

For example, the following Java code contains the executeQuery call:

if(command!=null && command.equals("RunQuery"))
{
    //query = request.getParameter("query")
    System.out.println("query "+query);
try{
     results = statement.executeQuery(query);

Well, That Sucked

So I'm mucking around with my computer, and decide to play some music. "F: is not formatted. Format now? Y/N" WTF?

So a "quick" CHKDSK later, I discover that there are several errors in the filesystem, caused by unreadable blocks. In short: the hard drive is failing. :(

So it looks like I'm going to be shopping for a new hard drive after work today. C'est la vie.

Update: And away I go, into the wild blue yonder, looking for a new hard drive.

Update 2: Got a new 250 GB hard drive, and Windows is now (slowly) partitioning it. Once that's done we begin the Great Copy.

Update 3: Finished copying the data over, now I just need to copy over the Linux data and I'll be all finished.

Lego Star Wars, for the PS2

Saw this at GameSpot while looking for information about Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and saw a preview for Lego Star Wars, for the PS2.

Yes, that's right. It's a PS2 game, based on the LEGO Star Wars sets. It's scheduled to be released in April of 2005, for the PC, PS2, X-Box, and Game Boy Advance.

I really have nothing more to say, other than this sounds like a really, really strange idea.
