Pidgin's UI Sucks
Update: Almost all the complaints in this post have been resolved in later Pidgin versions.
Apparently the Pidgin designers are retarded. The Pidgin UI has slowly been getting worse and worse as it tries to closely follow the GNOME philosophy of "our users are morons."
Let's take a look at the new Pidgin chat window. I've annotated it in red (craptastic text anti-aliasing by GIMP):
The worst by far is the new completely worthless bar of crap at the top of the window. The buddy icon (the yellow square to the right) used to be on the left next to the chat area. This worked OK since it didn't really constrain the text input area.
Now it's just taking up space it doesn't need.
The item to the left is content that's identical to the tab. (The only time it would be useful, and I do mean only, is if you have so many tabs open that the tab can't fit.)
Other than that, you have this giant bar of useless whitespace.
But wait, it's worse! You're allowed to hide the buddy icon, taking a large mostly-useless space and turning it into a large completely worthless space!
(Update: The bar of useless space is now optional. Sadly the version I have still insists on displaying the tab even if you enable "show detailed information.")
The "more wasted space" to the right of the formatting toolbar isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it's more of me complaining that they've collapsed almost all the formatting tools into the "Font" pulldown menu. Yes, that's a pulldown menu, as indicated by the absolutely nothing that differentiates it from "Reset Font" button which is just a normal button.
You might be fooled into thinking that the Insert menu (see, it's got an arrow, so you can guess it's a menu) is used to insert smileys. You'd be partly correct. It's also used to insert links and images.
Of course, because part of the GNOME philosophy is "we're right and you're an idiot" there's no option to change the UI back to the original. GNOME has this idea that offering options confuses people, and so they instead simply don't offer any.
(Update: There are options to change them back now. And the collapsed formating toolbar has been reworked so that they're all drop-down menus, and the smileys have been moved to another button.)
Overall, I'm yet again finding that I want to create a new front-end based on the Pidgin net code that creates a useful GUI instead of the crap they're offering instead.
