The Problem With (certain) News Media...

Topics
Web
slashdot.org

Slashdot has a very interesting story about a poor system administrator who was fired for running SETI@Home. You see, the evil management types found it to be a waste of their resources, claiming that it caused $1 million worth of damages!

Doesn't sound very fair, does it?

More Fun With Slashdot's CSS

Topics
slashdot.org

Slashdot has updated their CSS style sheets again. Yet again, there are little tweaks that would be nice. So here are some custom rules to add to your Firefox userContent.css file.

This contains rules to change Slashdot back to a Serif font, bolds the comment counts on the main page, and fixes some headers that were left with black text on various colored backgrounds - including black backgrounds in certain sections.

Update: Now contains rules to fix the "comment score" header (when viewing a comment, it's the box that lists the break down of moderation scores) and the "recent submissions" header.
Update 2: Added the missing Apache, BSD, and Features sections, which helpfully aren't listed under the sections bar on the left, but do, in fact, exist.
Update 3: Removed the rules to adjust the comment score, since Slashdot altered their own CSS to move the score to the left of the title.

More Slashdot Tagging Silliness

Topics
slashdot.org

So it's April Fools Day. Check the calendar. It is. Slashdot is doing their annual "run stupid stories" joke (tip: when an April Fools joke becomes annual, it's not funny any more), but this time, there are tags.

Most of the tags have been "aprilfools" - because, well, they are. However, most also received "gay" and several received "lame."

So, since "turn-around is fair play," let's look at some tags:

Duke Nukem Forever Reviewed: aprilfools, gay, straight, dnf, vaporware
Microsoft Buys OpenOffice.org: aprilfools, gay, straight, microsoft, openoffice

Another Good Slashdot Tag

Topics
slashdot.org

I've already mentioned some amusing Slashdot tags but I've got another one.

Vista May Put Anti-Spyware Companies Out - tagged "slownewsday"

Which, ironically enough, I guess it is, or I wouldn't be posting this...

Slashdot Tagging Beta

Topics
slashdot.org

Slashdot has recently allowed subscribers to start tagging stories. I'm hoping that subscribers can also view all stories given a certain tag, because non-subscribers (like me) currently can't, which makes the tags fairly useless.

But some of the tags so far have been rather amusing...

Game Previews Just Game Marketing? - obvious, duh
iTunes Sales Ban Does Increase CD Sales - bogus
Call for Apple Security 'Czar' - fud

Why I Don't Subscribe to Slashdot

Topics

According to Slashdot, someone's managed to create an energy device that's capable of achieving over 100% efficiency!

It's important news like that, which completely ignores minor things like thermodynamics, that ensures that no matter how often they beg for people to pay for the site that I never will.

According to the Slashdot summary, "[t]he article talks about the technology but doesn't exactly lay out specifics."

Gee. I wonder if that might be because perpetual motions machines are not possible!

Fun With Slashdot's New CSS

You may have read about how Slashdot has upgraded their site to use CSS, which allows some degree of custom styling. Well, I've mucked around with their CSS, and came up with the following userContent.css addition:

Strangest Post Ever

Topics
slashdot.org

Someone on Slashdot posted what I guess can be called a fable. The moral of the story is, supposedly, "that what seems like a good thing at the time can become an unmitigated disaster."

That's an ... interesting story. I'm glad he told us the moral ahead of time, because I sure didn't catch it.

Shit People Make Up

If you haven't read it, it's a story someone posted about how Microsoft AntiSpyware detects Mozilla Firefox as spyware. Except, of course, for the fact that it doesn't.

The story notes that the screenshots are "likely" fake as an update. "Likely" fake? The person who posted the shots says they're faked. People have run AntiSpyware and noted that it doesn't detect Firefox. Likely fake? They are fake and Slashdot knows it.

This is just yet another reason why I don't subscribe to Slashdot and likely never will. This is something that's so obviously unlikely and so obviously fake that there's no way the editors should have fallen for it. Until CmdrTaco and that crowd decide that they want to show they're willing to provide a service worth paying for, I'm not going to pay for it.

Slashdot Whines About Gilsellers

Topics
Final Fantasy

Apparently someone on Slashdot has gotten fed up with gilsellers (actually, in-game item sellers period) because we've recently gotten several stories about them:

Square-Enix Bans Over 800 FFXI Accounts
MMOG Currency Seller Owns Media Network ?
President of MMOG Currency Seller Grilled

My basic opinion is "who cares about item sellers?" and "if they're disrupting the game, perhaps the game developer should, oh, I don't know, be doing something about it!"
